Resting for precisely eight weeks and eight days in used American oak whiskey barrels defines the restrained wood influence of Tequila Ocho Reposado. Produced by fifth-generation agronomist Carlos Camarena in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco, Ocho harvests fully matured 100% Blue Weber agave from dedicated single estates (ranchos) to capture the microclimate of each vintage. The piñas undergo slow cooking in traditional masonry brick ovens, roller-mill extraction, and open-vat fermentation in wooden vats with airborne native yeasts before double distillation in small copper pot stills. By limiting cask contact to just barely over the legal two-month minimum, the estate ensures oak tannins soften the spirit without masking terroir-driven agave purity with artificial sweeteners or heavy wood additives.

A pale straw hue in the glass leads into a round, creamy mouthfeel anchored by caramelized slow-cooked agave, gentle butterscotch, and orchard fruits. Sweet baking spices-predominantly cinnamon bark and cracked white pepper-emerge across the mid-palate, seamlessly balanced by subtle vanilla bean and toasted oak staves. In-house testing at USQ showed the spirit retains all the crisp, vegetal cut of highland agave while gaining subtle textural weight from the spent whiskey cooperage. Our team recommends showcasing its nuanced wood spice in an elevated Oaxaca Old Fashioned: stir 1.5 oz Tequila Ocho Reposado, 0.5 oz unaged Mezcal Artesanal, 1 barspoon rich agave nectar (2:1), and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters over ice for 30 seconds, straining over a single large cube with an expressed orange peel.
